Some people don't realize that they are drinking far over the limit. They count carbs, cell phone minutes, even how many exercises they are doing, but are they counting their alcoholic drinks? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggests certain guidelines when it comes to drinking alcohol. That is why The Coalition, a local non-profit prevention agency, is recommending The Domino Strategy for Responsible Alcohol Use. If the strategy is not implemented, a domino effect of negative outcomes may result. Just like one domino starts a chain reaction, with each drink of alcohol other harmful actions may occur as a result of lack of self-control and poor judgment.
The Domino Strategy has 0-1-2 as a reminder on how to count drinks.
0: The strategy suggests that people with the following criteria have zero alcohol: Under 21, pregnant or trying to become pregnant, breastfeeding, operating any type of machinery, recovering alcoholics or drug dependent those using certain medications.
1: Women should drink no more than one drink per day. One standard drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces or wine or 1.5- ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.
2: Men should drink no more than two standard drinks per day.
Remember to not only count the drinks but also the size and the alcohol content. To find out more on the domino strategy, log on to: www.faceproject.org/domino or contact The Coalition at (936)634-9308 or www.angelinacoalition.org.
