What is your DJ name? Deacon Strukt
How did you come up with it? To construct a new beat from several tracks you first have to deconstruct the music that you're mixing, then rebuild it to form a new song. It's the basic element you start with, so, it seemed a natural alias.
Where have you played in the past, both locally and elsewhere in Texas? Really all over. Houston, Dallas, Shreveport, Nacogdoches, and, for those old school peeps of mine, the 'shop'.
Are you still in school? I'm working on a cinematography degree here in Shreveport. I was in school for business; wasn't for me. So, I am going in a more artistic direction. Right now I do a lot in graphic design and photography for the industry. Who knows, one day I may get the chance to work on movie sets!
How did you get into the business? I was in a band way back in the day as a bassist. The band became minorly successful and it went to my band mate's heads. They started doing drugs, getting to shows wasted, and before long not even showing up at all. I did all of the booking and management which looked bad on me. So, to combat the issues at hand, I started to produce music. I then became interested in the live aspect of dj'ing. Which turned out better because I started the Lawsofaugust and was able to help others in marketing their names. We now all work together to make the industry stronger. Unfortunately the fate of the band members was not good. Goes to show you just shouldn't do drugs!
What are your likes and dislikes about being a disc jockey? I like the aspect of control; I can alter the audience's emotional output by mixing certain songs. If I play a lot of fast tracks with minor dominated progressions, the crowd will feel more aggressive; however, if I play groovy tracks with an up-beat persona, there is a better chance you will have talking to that hot chick at the end of the bar. I don't like people messing with me while I'm mixing. Ask any dj and they will tell you the same thing. I know you're hot and you want to hug on the musician, but try and let it wait until after the set.
What would be your dream gig? I think a good day in dj'ing would be a hot night under the lights of a big city. Sweaty bodies on the dance floor craving your music, and a group of my best dj's rockin' the night sky. Just a good positive vibe all night until well into the next morning.
What are some of the hottest tracks you're spinning lately? People like my Nirvana House mix, Bloodrave, and my tranced Black Betty track.
If you could make a mix tape of your ten favorite songs, what would they be? This is a hard question, I have so many favorites! I would probably start out with a hardcore styling with DJ RX - Hellfire, then continue with Traced and the Mexican - Dirty, filthy, writhing, techno; Phil York's - Repentance; Dub One's - Cry of War; Wickaman's - U Disgust Me; Prodigy's - Voodoo People remix; my Crawling remix; Marc Smith - One with the Beat; and end with my hardest track Dan Clark's - Get Up. I've used that assembly before and it brought down the house!
What song would you gladly never play again? Oh god, after three hundred times of 'superman'ing' that hoe' I could throw up. Do you guys even know what that means? LoL, look it up ;).
