Juror Roger Shimomura recently announced the winners of the annual "Texas National" exhibition presented by the SFA School of Art.
Gail Hoffman of Syracuse, N.Y., received first place for her sculpture "Entropy"; Bloomfield Hills, Mich., artist Joshua Abelow received second place for his three-part painting series "Call Me," "Har Har Har Har," and "Deeper"; and Emily Hunt of Brooklyn, N.Y., received third place for her mixed media collage "J.Azz."
Shimomura also chose four honorable mentions for the show: "Beta 2" by Andy Bloxham of Ruston, La.; "Help Across" by Adrienne Brabham of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; "Weighs of the Heart" by Jerry E. Smith of Plano; and "Savior" by Jonathan Whitfill of Lubbock.
Now in its 14th year on the national scene, "Texas National" is open to all artists living and working in the United States. This year's show includes 92 works by 89 artists, chosen from entries by more than 400 artists from 47 states and the District of Columbia.
"Texas National 2008" and "Roger Shimomura: an American Foreigner" will run through May 18, at The Art Center @ The Old Opera House. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
